How Does Conversational Hypnosis Work

When most people first hear about the relatively obscure art of conversational hypnosis, their first question is “Does conversational hypnosis work?” However, most people have been exposed to these techniques most of their lives; they just didn't know it at the time.

You only have to turn on commercial television for about an hour or visit a car dealer for about 10 minutes, and you will get your fill of this subtle form of influence and manipulation … and you know it works for them.

So, the real question is “How does conversational hypnosis work … and what is it?”

On the most basic level, conversational hypnosis is simply a toolkit of covert and subtle techniques to get what you want by getting other people to see your point of view and to think the way you want them to think. You literally make them want to do what is in your favor to do.

Conversational hypnosis is based in behavioral science. It all began with Ivan Pavlov training his dogs to salivate on cue by ringing a bell every time he fed them. Later through the behavioral studies of B.F. Skinner, Milton Erickson, and Richard Bandler, it has been proven that given the proper stimulus and reward, you can get people to do pretty much anything.

Whereas it is obvious conversational hypnosis can be used for nefarious self-interests, it has many mutually beneficial applications as well … getting promotions to better serve your company, meeting people and improving your relationships, and negotiating better prices and terms for example.

Although conversational hypnosis works using different techniques and methods, how it works is really not much different from regular hypnosis. The human mind is comprised of the conscious and subconscious mind where the conscious mind is used for thinking and deliberate actions, and the subconscious mind controls your beliefs, reactions, personality, and behavior.

Hypnosis is simply a cooperative way for the hypnotist to speak directly to the subconscious mind to alter its beliefs. Since the subconscious mind does not know the difference between reality and imagined reality (i.e., beliefs and dreams), it accepts what it is told … as long as the critical conscious mind does not get in the way and tell it otherwise.

Conversational hypnosis works the same way except the conversational “hypnotist” has to direct the subconscious mind un-noticed to the conscious mind while the subject is fully awake and interactive.

How this is done varies tremendously, but in most cases, there are three simple stages. First, you must build read the subject’s way of thinking (i.e., his “representational system”). Secondly, you must use that information to build and maintain rapport. Finally, you must inject subtle suggestions to the subconscious while communicating to the conscious. This can be done silently, verbally in person or over the phone, and in writing such as in letters, web pages, emails, and texting.

Thus, even though it is not really hypnosis per se, it basically works the same way. You must bypass the conscious mind and communicate directly with the subconscious. You are telling the subconscious what you want it to believe it wants to do without the conscious mind detecting it and telling the subconscious to do otherwise.

The beauty of conversational hypnosis … and the danger as well … is that with proper training and a little practice, this is fairly easy to do.
