If you have credit card balances and you get an offer
for a credit card that charges 0% interest on balance transfers for a
limited time (e.g., 6 to 12 months), apply for the card and transfer
your balance. Then only make the minimum payments and put the rest of
your payment in a savings or money market account. Then within a month
of the end of the interest-free period, pay off the full balance of the
card with the money from your savings account. If you do not pay off the
full amount by the deadline, the account will accrue interest
retroactively at higher interest rates. Also, make sure read the fine
print and note any balance transfer fees. Some of the cards available
today offer zero balance transfer fees, but most charge 3% with a
minimum of $45. Unless the balance transfer is capped at $50 or less, it
may not be worth accepting the deal. For example, if you transfer
$10,000 with a 3% fee with no cap, you will pay $300 in transfer fees.
On the other hand, if the transfer fee is 3% with $50 cap, you are
effectively paying only 0.5% interest on your money until the end of the
interest-free period which IS a good deal compared to the average 19%
interest rate charged by most cards ($1,900 in annual interest). NOTE:
You Must NOT use this card for purchases while you carry a transferred
balance. Why? Because the credit card company will apply your payments
to paying off the 0% interest balance first and any purchases you made
will remain on the account accruing high interest rates until the full
balance is paid off.
