Chapter 2 –
How to Research Your New or Used Car Before You Buy to Save Thousands
Over the Life of Your Car
There are dozens of car manufacturers out there offering hundreds
of models of cars not too mention the millions of used cars in this
country alone. So, how do
you pick what you need? Many
people see a car and say, “I like that one; how much is it?”
Others think, “So and so has that model, and he’s cool.
So, that’s what I want too.
Can you get the monthly payment down to $400?”
I am going to show you an alternative way to pick the car you
want. It may not be the car
of your dreams, but it will be a lot closer to what you need than
“picking one off the streets.” This
chapter will show you how to research the market and narrow down your
choice of models to a reasonable number.
You will discover how to literally save thousands of dollars over
the period you own your new or used car.
You will determine how to find the right car with the features
you want, how to cut your insurance costs before you buy, how to
determine the fair value of the car you want, and more.
Whether you are buying new or used, your first step should be to
decide what basic features your car must have based on your
lifestyle. Once you’ve
determined the basic features, hopefully you will have limited your
options to a reasonable set of models to research in detail.
After you have narrowed your search down to a few models, you can
let your finances dictate whether you buy new or used and one model
versus another. In this section, we will show you how to research
everything you need for free.
SAVINGS
TIP!
When
selecting a new or used car, consider that a smaller engine in
terms of size or capacity as well as number of cylinders will
cost less to buy, use less fuel, and probably cost less to
maintain. Consider
if you really need to go from zero mph to 60 mph in five seconds
versus nine seconds.

We’re not going to get into
any psychology here, just go through the following list and mark the
items in column one you feel like you must have to meet your
needs and mark the extra features you’d like to have in column
two.

Now,
do some preliminary research to narrow down the list of cars you want.
To determine how flexible prices will be for each model, check
out the latest copy of Automotive News at your local library or
online at http://www.autonews.com/
.
Look up the national sales performance and inventory of any model
of car you're interested in buying.
If sales are down and/or inventories are up, then prices will
have declined since last year and you should be able to negotiate a
better deal. Anytime you are
buying, you want to buy when demand is low; we’ll talk more about this
in chapter four.
